General Information

The District 95 Orchestra Program offers students an opportunity for personal growth and enrichment through the study of a stringed instrument.  At the elementary level, the basics of music covered in orchestra include note reading, musical vocabulary, performance technique, and practice habits.
 
Elementary Orchestra is a co-curricular, elective subject offered to students in 4th and 5th grades.  The instruments in orchestra are Violin, Viola, Cello, and String Bass.
 

Beginners' Orchestra

The Beginners' Orchestra is made up of fourth grade students. The Elementary Orchestra rehearses once weekly for 60 minutes as a large ensemble.  In addition, each student receives a weekly sectional class during the school day for one-half hour, in a small group setting.
 

Prelude Orchestra

The Prelude Orchestra is made up of fifth grade students.  The Prelude Orchestra rehearses once weekly for 60 minutes as a large ensemble.  In addition, each student receives a weekly sectional class during the school day for one-half hour, in a small group setting.
 

Performances

Students enrolled in the elementary Orchestra program perform in three formal concerts during the school year.  There may be additional performance opportunities throughout the school year such as school assemblies, Solo & Ensemble Contest, and outreach opportunities.
 

Elementary Orchestra Directors

At May Whitney, Seth Paine, and Spencer Loomis Elementary Schools, the orchestras are led by Mrs. Mary Reitsma.  At Isaac Fox and Sarah Adams Elementary Schools, the orchestras are led by Mrs. Catherine Schmidt.
