Program Description

The high school Art Curriculum offers a number of courses in a variety of media. The goals of the program are to provide a broad foundation in art practice and art history. Students will be encouraged to develop artistic skills and abilities, appreciate the history of art and be able to analyze and theorize about its origins, and develop modern principles and production skills and concerning design.

General Policies

One credit is required in a humanities-related field in order to graduate. Art is a humanities field.

College-Bound Students

College-bound students who aspire to study in a field related to art are recommended to take four full years of art.

Recommendation For Placement

1. Recommendation for placement in any course is based on effort, motivation, and performance. Each teacher monitors these three aspects and considers them in making a recommendation of placement for the student for the following year.
2. A teacher recommendation and portfolio review by mid-January of the preceding school year is required for placement into AP Studio Art.
3. Parents are welcome to contact the Guidance Department or the Fine Arts Department Chair for further information about course descriptions or placement of individual students.
